How to Import Audio from a CD

CDs are recorded with a sample rate of 44.1kHz. FCP uses a sample rate of 48kHz. So you must go through a 3 step process to import audio successfully:

Here are more detailed instructions:

Import the music

  1. create a folder for your imported clips
  2. insert your CD
  3. if you don't know what track you want, use Itunes to listen to the CD (Itunes may begin automatically)
  4. drag the track you want onto your firewire drive to copy it
  5. close Itunes
  6. eject the CD
  7. open FCP
  8. go to File | Import | files
  9. select the track from your firewire drive
  10. click "choose"
  11. the track should appear in your bin with the name and the file extension .cdda
  12. do not use the track in this form--it is the wrong sample rate

export the music with the correct sample rate

  1. select the track
  2. go to File | Export | Quicktime
  3. in the export dialogue, select "options," then "Settings," and select a sample rate of 48kHz0
  4. select the folder you created for your import clips
  5. click "choose"

re-import your file

  1. go to File | Import | Files
  2. choose your track
  3. the track should appear in your bin with file extension .mov (quicktime)
  4. delete the other file with the .cdda extension to prevent you from accidentally using it
