Required Texts:
- Kristin Thompson & David Bordwell, Film History: An Introduction (2nd ed., New York: McGraw-Hill, 2002)
- CA 352 Course Reader (Bob's Copy Shop)
Assignments:
- 10% Discussion and Screenings (quizzes, participation, one Cinematheque screening)
- 25% Mid-term Exam (October 16)
- 35% Biographical Sketch (November 5) and Analytical Essay (December 3)
- 30% Final Exam (December 18, 2:45 p.m., location T.B.A.)
Attendance and Classroom Protocol:
- CA 352 is a three-credit class involving five hours of in-class time per week. If your schedule does not permit you to attend both lectures, the discussion section, and the two-hour screening each week, then you will be advised to drop the course and take it when it is compatible with your schedule.
- Please turn off your cell phones and pagers before entering 4070 Vilas and sections.
- Food and drink is strictly forbidden in 4070 Vilas.
Readings:
Film History readings should be completed prior to Tuesday's lecture. Course Reader assignments should be completed prior to discussion sections. Not everything in the readings will be covered in lecture or sections. Nevertheless, read everything carefully and take notes. You are responsible for all of the reading material for exams.
Expectations:
- CA 350 (Introduction to Film) is a pre-requisite for this course. We will assume that you understand the basics of film style (cinematography, editing, sound, and mise-en-scene) and narrative (range and depth of narration, story vs. plot, etc.).
- We strongly advise against taking CA 350 and CA 352 simultaneously (even if the registration computer lets you do it, that does not make it a good idea).
- Since this will be (at least) your second film course, we assume that you have a genuine and active curiosity about film history and contemporary film culture.
Screening Policy
- Attendance will be taken at five screenings.
- If you miss all five, you will not get an A in the course, on the grounds that you have missed 10 hours of class time.
- Two of the five screenings: Nov. 18 (My Hustler) and Nov. 25 (Legendary Weapons of China).
- If you cannot make even one of these screenings with two month’s notice, please drop the course.
